King of Prussia – A History
Known to many in South- Eastern Pennsylvania for its large mall – the largest in the United States – King of Prussia is also home to us here at the Jonus Group and an area rich in history. Located only a few miles from the famous Valley Forge, Welsh immigrants began settling in the area early in the 18th century. At the time, the area known as Reeseville was often called “King of Prussia,” after a tavern that was owned by the Reese family. By 1850, the name made official when the US Postal Service adopted the popular moniker.
While many agree that the tavern, and later the surrounding town, were named after Frederick the Great, the exact reasons for adopting the name are still disputed. Some maintain that the name was adopted to honor Frederick for his support of the British in the Seven Years War, others claim the name was a marketing ploy designed to attract local Prussian soldiers, while others claim the name was to pay respect to Frederick for his admiration of George Washington.
Regardless of the reasons, King of Prussia remains an economic powerhouse, being home to various construction, healthcare, and professional service companies. The area continues to fuel growth contributing to Montgomery County’s growth overall and is poised to make up for the nearly 50,000 jobs lost in the recession of 2008. In addition to companies that employ a sizeable population, the food and drink scene is top notch as well!
