13 Jul What is a Career Coach and Do You Need One?
It’s not always easy to admit we need a little help with something or a push in the right direction. One thing we tend to pride ourselves on is figuring things out by ourselves. This goes for finding a job, too. Finding a job that’s perfect for you is like seeing the sunshine after weeks of downpour or finding that missing sock to complete the pair. But it’s definitely not an easy thing to accomplish by yourself. Perhaps we need a little help from a certified Career Coach.
What is a Career Coach?
With the basic definition, a Career Coach is someone who can help you adjust your career path, improve your visibility in the job market, and guide you through the next steps of your career.
Career Coaches can specialize in specific fields—to offer support and advice on how to grow your career in that field—or can be knowledgeable in the more general job field and hiring process—to provide tips and tricks on how to pass job applications and get interviews.
While some do offer a limited number of services, most Career Coaches do offer the base-level support of rewriting your resume to surpass the Applicant Tracking System (ATS – the system that companies use to scan resumes before they get into the hands of hiring managers), update your social media (particularly LinkedIn) to give you the best professional account so companies are more likely to see you, and multiple other services.
How do you find one?
Overall, there are a few different ways you can find a Career Coach.
1. Ask Friends, Family, and Colleagues
More than likely, those around you have already had contact with a Career Coach at some point. Ask them if they have any recommendations on a specific company or individual Career Coach.
Doing this, you might be able to find a Career Coach sooner rather than later and you can have a little more trust in them since those around you recommend their services.
2. Look on LinkedIn
Many Career Coaches have visible LinkedIn accounts that you can find with a simple search. If you search keywords like “Career Coaching,” “Resume Services,” or “Job Seekers” you can find a number of posts relating to a Career Coach. Further, be sure to keep an eye on the comment section of posts, too!
If you want a Career Coach to reach out to you specifically, you might want to consider making your own post on LinkedIn using those keywords. A Career Coach is looking for clients just as much as you are looking for them, so by indicating you are interested in career services, you will already gain their attention.
3. Don’t Delete those “Spam” Messages on LinkedIn Before Reading
If you’re the kind of person to delete messages from people you don’t know on LinkedIn without looking at them carefully (trust me, I get it. I used to do that, too), then you might be deleting your possible Career Coach.
Many Career Coaches will reach out to clients in the comments of their posts or via messaging. They will offer their services in as detailed information as the space allows. When they send out messages to potential clients, their message might be a bit lengthy in order to explain their services thoroughly. Read these messages carefully and see if anything they offer might be of help to you.
If their services seem close but not quite what you’re looking for, don’t be afraid to ask questions. They most likely offer more services than they are advertising to you in that initial message.
Do you need a Career Coach?
Are you struggling to get interviews? Are you stuck in a weird imbalance of getting interviews but not getting hired? Do you have an outdated resume? Is your career at a standstill? Do you want to change industries?
If your answer was yes to any of these, chances are you probably need a Career Coach.
How can a Career Coach help?
Though this sounds a bit like the philosophical fluff phrases, it’s still a bit true: our biggest enemy tends to be ourselves. On a career standpoint, this means we tend to hold back or hinder our chances of moving forward.
Have you ever been a bit afraid of taking that next step? Or taking that giant leap from quitting your job? A Career Coach can help with that. They offer expertise and resources that can assist you in taking that next step forward. Reaching out to them is just the beginning of the right career path for you.
